Structural & Drywall Metal Stud Prices – South US January 2024

Metal Stud Prices Lean-to green house in North Dakota made out of metal studs

Metal stud prices are closely tied to steel demand and supply. Industry experts anticipate a moderate increase in steel demand in North America during 2024. Metal stud prices have been, and still are, currently rising due to the turbulence experienced at the end of 2023. This was due to multiple steel mills shutting down for repairs, taking advantage of the drop in demand resulting from strikes in the auto industry. Pricing is often cyclical, usually in 6-month periods of rising and falling. We here at US Frame Factory, of course, will work with clients to time the market and get the best deals.

When will metal stud prices drop again?

If the cyclical nature of the steel pricing is to be expected, steel pricing as a whole should start to fall after the first quarter of 2024.

What size metal studs do we offer?

We produce metal studs with widths ranging from 1-5/8″ to 12″, featuring flange widths ranging from 1-1/4″ to 4″ in height. Our manufacturing capabilities extend from 28 gauge to 12 gauge.

When should you build with metal studs?

In the United States, building codes dictate which material you can use. Various structures such as hospitals, schools, churches, office buildings, and mid-rise constructions are subject to mandatory fire rating and shelter building regulations. Metal studs provide fire resistance, enabling walls to achieve elevated fire ratings. The adoption of metal stud framing is on the rise in all regions along the US Gulf Coast, attributed to its commendable wind resistance and suitability for humid climates.

What’s your lead time?

We carry small quantities of steel for most profiles and can manufacture the metal in 1-2 days. For larger custom length orders expect 1-2 weeks.

What’s the cost of steel vs wood framing?

At 20′ six inch 18 gauge stud is $36, while a 20′ pressure treated 2×6 is $28.49. From a financial standpoint, steel framing tends to incur a higher upfront cost compared to its wooden counterpart. It’s a more robust and durable material, and that strength comes at a price. There are certain long-term benefits to steel. Its durability often results in reduced maintenance costs over time. It’s less susceptible to the ravages of pests and decay, which can be a substantial advantage in the grand scheme of things. Furthermore, steel tends to exhibit greater resilience in specific environmental conditions. Think of it as an investment in durability, particularly in regions prone to termites or characterized by high humidity.
